About Charing House Care & Nursing Home

The project began in 2010 to provide a total of 88 beds divided up into separate wings named after former mayors and lady mayors of Gillingham. The home is split up into 5 seperate wings: Bessie Parr Wing will be 22 beds, George Smith Wing with 22 beds, William Griffin Wing with 19 beds, Barry Hodgman Wing with 8 beds and Freddie Cooper Wing with 16 beds.

There is a passenger carrying lift to all floors in the building for those unable to manage stairs. A service lift runs separately to 2 floors. The Home has been designed and furnished to ensure wheelchair access in all rooms, and all bathrooms contain either a static bath or a shower tray and are large enough to accommodate lifting aids. The Home has a variety of specialist equipment required to care for our clients. All rooms are fitted with a nurse call system and pressure mats in some rooms which are linked to the call system, a telephone and aerial point, and a suite of furniture one of which has a lockable facility should the client wish to maintain safe keeping for personal effects.

Charing House offers all their clients 3 meals a day, which are breakfast, lunch and high tea, as well as snacks and refreshments throughout the day. We offer a variety of dishes to choose from our menu each day for each meal. Charing House has a seasonal menu, which works on a 4 weekly cycle. All our food is freshly brought in, homemade and nutritionally balanced, which we feel is very important. Our menu's may vary slightly depending on the client's needs/likes. Please feel free to take a look at our  Winter Menu.

At Charing House we encourage all our residents to take part in the wide range of activities. Please feel free to take a look at a weekly planner which we have put together by way of an example.

We believe that coming into a care home should be as smooth as possible and our residents made to feel that they have a home from home experience. To this end we are open to having our very own pets. Residents who wish to be involved in taking care of them can be or can relax and enjoy having them around. Where practicable and safe, we will consider whether or not residents can bring in their own pets from home but this would be at the discretion of the Manager and would involve a risk assessment having to be completed.

I can't speak highly enough of Charing House. Firstly it's a beautiful building, very clean, warm and well furnished. Secondly, the care provided is exceptional. In these days of negative reports and concerns about care homes, I feel lucky to have found a place for my Mum at Charing House. She was happy there and was extremely well cared for. The staff treated her with respect and dignity and always took her preferences into account when entering her room. I have been kept well informed of her well being especially towards the end of her days.

Mum was only in Charing House for a few weeks for end of life care. She was looked after so well. Staff were kind and efficient on the occasions I saw them interact with mum. The home is lovely, beautifully laid out and the rooms very pleasant and peaceful. Senior staff always had time to update on mum's condition. A good, comfortable place to end her days.

Mum moved into the home in February 2012 until she passed away on 22 May 2018. She was always treated with kindness and dignity even at the very end. The management and carers provided an excellent service during her stay.

All the staff are excellent. They are kind, compassionate and professional. They cared for my dad right up to the very end and even after he died (last night).

We would like to thank you and your team on the nursing wing for the care and respect that you provided to our father for the short time he was with you. Your team were exemplary in the level of tenderness that they showed him and professionalism in the way in which they went about their duties.

I wanted to write and thank you and all your staff at Charing House Care Home for the care that you gave to my Mum, while she was with you. I know you all made her as comfortable as possible. She was always telling me how good everyone was and how well she was looked after. I have told the doctor that I would not hesitate to recommend Charing House to anyone.

Our Dads home was Charing House, Gillingham for the last 3 years of his life. He was not only cared for but he was loved by the members of staff as though they were his own family. Each time we took him out for days, upon return, he would always comment "I Love It Here". The meals and snacks are varied and of an exceptionally high standard, we know this as we have always been welcome to take a meal with Dad. We first introduced Dad to the home as a 5* Hotel to settle him in. This would be the same today as the food, snacks, facilities, cleanliness, hygiene and above all the Staff are of an exceptionally high standard. All of Dads family would highly recommend this home to anyone that has Dementia.

My mother was a resident at Charing House for almost 5 years during which time her family visited regularly and we were always pleased to see how well cared for and happy she was. All of the staff were pleasant and couldn't do enough for her, especially in the last weeks of her life when she was treated with the utmost dignity and respect, for which we are extremely grateful. We would highly recommend this care home.

Set in the original Municipal Buildings, Charing House is directly adjacent to Gillingham Park and therefore gives a relaxing outlook from many of the residents' rooms and also the facility for residents to be able to walk with their families around the park, if sufficiently mobile to do so. In our opinion, care is of a high standard at Charing House and we have been very happy with how our loved one is treated. We would highly recommend this care home to others seeking a clean, caring and dignified environment for their relative.
